Does an umbrella policy cover a teen driver?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

Usually, if the teen is a resident relative and is listed on an auto policy that meets the umbrella’s underlying requirement. Personal umbrellas generally extend to household members. Problems arise when a teen drives a car that isn’t scheduled, a car titled in the teen’s own name or a business’s name, or when the auto liability limit is below the umbrella’s minimum. Triple-I lists a teenage driver as a reason to consider an umbrella.

Why teen drivers matter

Triple-I names “having a dog or a teenage driver in the house” among the lifestyle risks that can attract a lawsuit. Serious auto claims can exceed typical auto limits quickly, which is the situation an umbrella is built for.

Where coverage breaks

The umbrella sits on top of the auto policy, so the auto policy has to be in place at the required limit. Under the ISO maintenance condition, the umbrella pays no more than it would have if the required underlying insurance were in force. Common gaps: a teen’s car insured separately at low limits, a vehicle titled to the teen or to a company, a student away at school with a car the umbrella doesn’t list, or a teen who isn’t listed on the auto policy at all.

What to confirm

Confirm that every household driver is listed, every vehicle is scheduled on the umbrella, and each auto policy meets the umbrella’s minimum. Recheck whenever a teen gets a license or a new car.
