Does an umbrella policy cover my boat or yacht?
Last reviewed:
Often only if the boat’s liability is insured underneath it. The standard ISO personal umbrella excludes watercraft liability except to the extent underlying watercraft coverage applies, and many insurer forms add length or horsepower limits. For a larger boat or yacht, the umbrella usually expects a watercraft or yacht policy with liability (protection and indemnity) at a required minimum, listed on the umbrella’s declarations.
How the standard form treats watercraft
The ISO personal umbrella analysis describes a watercraft exclusion for bodily injury or property damage arising from craft “propelled by wind, engine or electric motor,” and adds that “coverage does exist if there is underlying watercraft coverage but only to the extent of that coverage.” In plain terms, the umbrella sits on top of the boat policy. It does not replace it.
Why size and use matter
Insurer forms differ. Some cover small boats without an underlying policy, and some set length or horsepower thresholds above which a scheduled watercraft policy is required. Larger yachts are usually insured on a yacht form whose liability section (protection and indemnity) must meet the umbrella’s minimum. Paid crew, charter use, and cruising area can raise further questions. The Massachusetts Division of Insurance lists watercraft among the “underlying insurance” an umbrella may require you to maintain.
What to confirm
Confirm that every boat, tender, and personal watercraft is either clearly within the umbrella’s small-boat allowance or scheduled with an underlying liability limit that matches the umbrella’s requirement.
